The Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam (Brunei) is the largest net exporter of oil and gas in Asia with 125,000 barrels per day (b/d).
The first oil was discovered in Brunei in 1899 near Bandar Seri Begawan city and in 1925 Shell created Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) to explore and develop the Seria field onshore in the southwest of Brunei.
The offshore exploration and production started only in 1960s with the Ampa and Champion giant fields located respectively in the southwest and north of the country.
In 2006, Brunei reached its peak of production with 220,000 b/d to become the third largest producer of oil and gas in Asia.
Since then, the depletion of the fields generated the decline of production down to 141,000 b/d in 2012.

In this context, the Sultanate of Brunei decided to proceed to new investments to restore its oil and gas production from the existing fields.
These fields developments will require additional production wells and the deployment of the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies.
As historical partner in Brunei, Shell is leading these new developments upstream.
In addition Brunei, as most of the oil and gas producing countries, is not willing to rely only on the net export of oil and gas with its related fluctuated revenues.
Therefore the Sultanate is currently working on a large integrated refinery and aromatics complex project together with the Chinese company Zhejiang Hengyi Petrochemicals co.ltd (Zhejiang Hengyi).
With these projects, Brunei should find again the way to develop its economy with balanced upstream and downstream activities.
